Description

We live in a world that is more prosperous than at any time in history. Child and maternal mortality continue their downward trend, meaning a child born today has a better chance of survival than any time in history. Technology means the flow of money and information across boundaries makes our world more inter-connected than ever.

Despite this progress, enormous challenges remain. Too many people simply don’t have access to quality, basic services: a school girl in Northern Nigeria can expect to spend the equivalent of one term in education during her entire life. Dramatic changes in climate are impacting on the poorest through accelerating droughts and floods, the slow progress on gender equality holding back the aspirations of many women and girls.  Global structures and institutions for solving these crises are under more strain than ever, as the old post-cold war order is challenged by the newly confident BRICS’ nations.

#GlobalChallenges brings together the world’s most influential thinkers, decision makers, business leaders and opinion makers. The aim is to share ideas, debate and highlight practical action around these major issues – issues which often don’t get air-time in the domestically focussed public agenda. Each debate is open for public participation – through lively public events at ODI Headquarters or in global digital space.

Communities across the world can watch the live-streamed events to join the debate by asking questions through social media. It’s a unique opportunity to hear the discussion and put questions to some of the leading figures shaping our world.
