Rohingya boat crisis - expert available for interview

Written by Lilianne Fan

Press Release

Asia expert available for interview on the Rohingya boat crisis – Lilianne Fan – Research Associate from the humanitarian programme at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) (the UK’s largest development aid think tank). Lilianne has advice for how the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should respond to hundreds of Rohingya Muslims being stranded at sea off the coast of Malaysia.

Lilianne has written extensively about humanitarian responses in Asia and is the author of Regional organisations and humanitarian action: the case of ASEAN. Lilianne has spent a considerable amount of time in Asia and was extensively interviewed about the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Lilianne has appeared in, for example, The Guardian, BBC, Daily Mail, Bangkok Post and Al Jazeera.

Lilianne Fan can speak on the following:

1. Malaysian citizens are currently organising private charter vessels for rescue and to deliver aid. Indonesian civil society organisations are lobbying their government to take a softer approach.

2. Quiet diplomacy efforts are underway; ASEAN governments are being lobbied to commit to a comprehensive plan to manage the crisis, which would include shelters and camps, as well as efforts to stabilise and improve conditions in Rakhine State in Myanmar.

Lilianne is available for print, phone, face to face and TV interviews. She is based in Bangkok and can be reached at +66924619131 and [email protected].
