Scaling Up on HIV/AIDS: People and Promises, Opinions and Reality

Written by Fiona Samuels

Explainer

In the run up to the 16th International AIDS Conference, which takes place from 13th-18th August in Toronto, ODI is hosting a series of four meetings with the central theme of HIV/AIDS. Partnering with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, UNAIDS, UNHCR and UNICEF, the meetings will focus on a number of topical issues on the HIV/AIDS agenda.

In keeping with ODI tradition, these meetings promise to be stimulating discussions at which academics, policy makers and practitioners will have the opportunity to share their points of view.

The first meeting, ‘Do Big Plans Help Big Numbers? Lessons and Challenges in HIV/AIDs’, was fully booked.  Speakers from World Health Organisation (WHO); the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); UNAIDS; Western Cape Department of Health, South Africa; The Lighthouse Trust, Malawi; and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance created a stimulating debate.  You can read a full meeting summary and download audio here http://www.odi.org.uk/speeches/aids_06/7%20June/index.html.

The second meeting, ‘HIV/AIDs among conflict affected and displaced populations: Dispelling myths and taking action’ attracted a broad audience to hear speakers from UNHCR and Medicins Sans Frontiers.  Meeting summary and audio available here:
