Kenya election 2013: not such a rosy picture?

Explainer

In an outspoken interview following an ODI event looking at the prospects for governance in Kenya and Ghana, journalist Michela Wrong expressed her view that the Kenyan elections were deeply flawed saying:

'People are relieved that violence hasn't broken out, and that is something to celebrate. But this has not been a satisfactory election.'

In this interview Jonathan Tanner - Media and Public Affairs Officer, ODI - asks Michaela Wrong about how she perceived the March 2013 Kenya elections. Her analysis is considerably less optimistic than the prevailing narrative across international media.

In an article on Foreign Policy Alina Rocha Menocal provides some observations on what the elections say about the overall health of democracy in Kenya, and asks 'Did the election pass the test? The answer depends on your level of optimism.'
