Fast-forward twenty-five years and much progress has been made when it comes to women’s rights.Women’s representation in the world’s parliaments has doubled, and women leaders, though few in number, have been lauded for their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. Declines in maternal mortality rates, female genital mutilation and the number of child brides are significant signs of progress. But Covid-19 has laid bare many of the challenges; from the increase in domestic violence and femicide, to the disproportionate care burden women face or their reliance on more precarious work. The rise of populism is equally threatening to the global women’s equality agenda, bringing a renewed emphasis on unambiguous gender roles constrained by patriarchy. Addressing these challenges will require society-wide action alongside action to change the hearts and minds of individuals. Join us for a half-day virtual conference on 10 December where we will explore what should be prioritised in a forward-looking agenda for gender equality and harness the opportunities to build a ‘new normal.’Speakers Sara PantulianoChief Executive @SaraPantuliano Elissa GolbergAssistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy, Global Affairs Canada @CanadaDev Rt Hon Helen ClarkFormer Prime Minister of New Zealand @HelenClarkNZ Wafa Bani Mustafa MPChair, Coalition of Women MPs from Arab Countries to Combat Violence Against Women Caroline HarperPrincipal Research Fellow, Director of Programme – Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Grace Kyomuhendo BantebyaProfessor of Women and Gender Studies, Makerere University Gary BarkerPresident and Chief Executive, Promundo @Promundo_US Meredith Preston McGhieSecretary General, Global Centre for Pluralism @MeredithGCP Poonam MuttrejaExecutive Director, Population Foundation India @Letstransform Rachel JewkesDirector of Global Programme, What Works to Prevent Violence @WhatWorksVAWG Roberta ClarkeOfficer in Charge, East and Southern Africa Regional Office, UN Women, Rachel GeorgeResearch Fellow Gender Equality and Social Inclusion @Rageorge88 Sagar SachdevaThe YP Foundation @TheYPFoundation Pilar DomingoSenior Research Fellow Politics and Governance Steve LeeExecutive Director, Foundation for Environmental Stewardship & 3% project Kathryn Nwajiaku-DahouDirector of Programme – Politics and Governance Politics and Governance @NwajiakuKathryn Rachel MarcusSenior Research Fellow Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Shannon O'ConnellDirector of Programmes, Westminster Foundation for Democracy @WFD_Democracy Lori MichauCo-founder & Co-Director, Raising Voices @RV_VAC Chamathya FernandoCoordinator, Stop Violence Campaign, Sri Lanka @chamathya93 Laurel WeldonDistinguished SFU Full Professor of Political Science, Simon Fraser University @SLaurelWeldon Megan DaigleSenior Research Fellow Humanitarian Policy Group @megandorothea Zoey RoyPoet & Community Educator @therealzoeyroy Kerrie HollowaySenior Research Officer Humanitarian Policy Group @kerrie115WatchODI live events · Zoey Roy's poem on upholding momentum on the women's rights agendaPartnersDownloads Agenda | Upholding momentum on the women's rights agendaDocumentpdf Virtual Jamboard comments and reflections Documentpdf Briefing note | Upholding momentum on the women's rights agendaDocumentpdfRelatedSara PantulianoThe Nairobi Summit, one year on: the march for women’s rights continues Gender norms and women in politics: evaluating progress and identifying challenges on the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform 01 April 2020Beijing 25 years on: out of the shadows, into the mainstreamCaroline Harper, Carmen Leon-Himmelstine, Rachel George...Covid-19 – why gender matters Sara PantulianoCovid-19: ‘we won’t get back to normal because normal was the problem’
