This workshop looked at challenges and opportunities in measuring theimpact and results of Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationala Zusammenarbeit
(GIZ) governance programmes. Alina Rocha Menocal delivered a
presentation on the the current state of the international debate on
governance, and why assessing the impact of governance interventions has
proven difficult as well as providing possible ways forward.
Objectives of the workshop
GIZ has worked in governance programmes in Africa fordecades but with different success and impact. In the context of aninternational results agenda as well as mixed democratization trends inSub-Saharan Africa, GIZ now wants to look at challenges and opportunities in measuring the impact and results of its governance programmes.
This workshop, attended by governance experts workingin GIZ headquarters as well as in programmes abroad, served as a first step toa longer term dialogue within GIZ and with external experts on the impact ofour governance programmes.

- What is the current international debate on measuring governance and what are interesting new approaches relevant to GIZ?
- What are key themes and challenges to improve and better measure the impact of GIZ governance programmes in the regional context of Sub-Saharan Africa?
