Description

Join us for the Malawi media launch of the report 'Fragmented governance and local service delivery in Malawi'This new report by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is based on research undertaken in two districts, Dedza and Rumphi, as well as one city, Blantyre, and seeks to understand the barriers to the delivery of health, education and water and sanitation services. The research findings come at an important time for Malawi as the country prepares to vote, on 20 May, in an election that includes local councillors for the first time in almost a decade.

The ODI report reveals that ad hoc public service reforms have resulted in confusion, mismanagem
ent and duplication, allowing scarce resources to be squandered. Researchers found many instances of hard-working local officials achieving remarkable successes with little money or support. But overall, these achievements were in spite of, not because of, the institutions supposed to deliver them.

The launch will include a presentation by the report co-author Professor Fidelis Kanyongolo. ODI's key recommendations will also be presented. Interview
opportunities will be available and this event will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person. This media launch is part of the National Consultative Conference on Local Governance which is being held in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 12 - 13 May.
