​The world is changing, and the humanitarian system is changing along with it. But is the ‘traditional’ and largely Western humanitarian sector ready for these changes?

How will greater involvement from countries like Russia, China and Turkey shift the balance of power, and what does it mean for humanitarian funding, for the types of responses, and most importantly, for people affected by humanitarian crises?

Join us for the 3rd HPG Annual Lecture, delivered by Alexander Alimov, Deputy Director, Department of International Organisations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Addressing the shifts taking place in the humanitarian landscape, with reference to Russia’s humanitarian aid policy, how they are perceived by the ‘traditional’ system and potential for cooperation, Alimov will shed light on the rising global players at large in humanitarian action.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Alexander Alimov is the Deputy Director of the Department of International Organisations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Russian Federation. His areas of responsibility include multi-lateral diplomacy, specialising on the United Nations development agenda and humanitarian affairs. He represents the Russian Federation across various global humanitarian mechanisms including the OCHA Donor Support Group, the Central Emergency Response Fund and the UNISDR Hyogo Framework for Action. He has been posted twice to the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN in New York and has participated in numerous negotiations on key UN documents including UNGA and ECOSOC resolutions and declarations. He has worked with the MFA since 1995 and was previously posted in the Russian Embassy to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
