Description

As we move into 2016, many regions of the world are ridden with conflict and violence. In countries where armed violence is the norm, sexual violence, crime, exploitation and torture can be part of everyday life. With the Sustainable Development Goals now adopted, leaders are committed to finding lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity by 2030. This will require a global effort to strengthen the rule of law, promote human rights, including women's rights, reduce the flow of illicit arms and ensure developing countries are active participants in global governance.

Yet with several key world leaders actively opposed to the global goal on ‘peace, justice and strong institutions’, how can we ensure that the process is inclusive? How can progress be made in promoting global peace when millions of refugees are displaced due to conflict and human rights atrocities?

Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development leads this debate on how Europe can contribute towards creating a safer world.
