In the last 25 years, the world has managed to halve the number of people living in extreme poverty. Despite this progress there are still hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty today. In 2015, leaders of all countries committed to eradicate extreme poverty everywhere by 2030, the first of the SDGs.

Ahead of the UN Secretary General’s ‘High-level meeting on financing the 2030 agenda’, ODI launches a major new report that details how the world can finance the end of extreme poverty.

The report shows 400 million are at risk of remaining in extreme poverty by 2030. This is unless the international community focuses their efforts on the 48 countries that will be unable to reach this goal themselves. The report demonstrates, through a new donor index, how a more efficient and targeted allocation of public finance combined with donors increasing aid to meet 0.7% gross national income commitment, can put this goal within the world’s reach. 

Join us at this breakfast briefing on the latest evidence and analysis, which includes updated poverty projections to 2030, calculations on individual countries’ financing gap and a detailed assessment of donor aid spending to inform policy development. The discussion also explores the actions needed to deliver, and particularly finance, the ambition to end extreme poverty.

Biographies

Charlotte Petri Gornitzka was elected as Chair of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) in 2016. Prior to this, she served as Director-General of the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA) where she emphasised Sweden’s role as leader in development co-operation. She has previously served as Secretary-General of Save the Children International (2008-2010) and Secretary-General of Save the Children Sweden (2003-2008).

Marcus Manuel is a Senior Research Associate for ODI working on development finance issues, especially in low-income and fragile states. Prior to joining ODI, Marcus held a number of senior management roles within the UK’s Department for International Development.
