Poor performance of the 2017 rainy season in the Sahel region led to widespread pasture and water deficits, with Mauritania and northern Senegal the most affected. Climate change is expected to increase the impact of poor rainy seasons, making the identification of effective ways to help farmers and herders prepare for and cope with weather shocks and other natural hazards a key priority for the region.

This side event, organised by ODI and the Government of Senegal, showcases the different experiences of BRACED case studies from northern Kenya, Ethiopia and Senegal in supporting climate adaptation through the design and provision of flexible financial products for private actors along agricultural and pastoral value chains. Alongside BRACED partners, other key actors in the field of resilient food systems and value chains, including international organisations and private financial service providers, will contribute their expertise and experiences to the session.

This session provides a platform for conversations with national and regional policymakers around the legislative and regulatory frameworks, government-led initiatives and opportunities for action that can support the provision of financial services along value chains to enhance food security across African countries.
