Olena Borodyna

Research Officer
Olena is a Researcher in ODI’s Risk and Resilience team. She completed her Master's degree in Geopolitics, Territory and Security at King's College London. Her research is focused on the impact of Belt and Road Initiative on geopolitical alliances in Central Asia, China's evolving role in water governance in South-East Asia, and evaluating effectiveness of international dispute resolution mechanisms.

Whilst completing her Master's degree, Olena was an Intern Analyst at a business intelligence company, and a Project Leader for ReachOut, a mentoring youth charity. 

Olena studied her undergraduate in Chinese and History at SOAS, University of London. Her research focused on border delineation and modern state formation in East and South-East Asia, and the history of Chinese diaspora communities in Thailand and Malaysia. 

During her year abroad in Beijing, China, Olena volunteered at Crossroads Centre, a women's and LGBT rights NGO. Whilst at SOAS, she also volunteered as a translator for UNDP Ukraine and donor researcher at New Beginnings Charitable Trust, India. 

Olena is a fluent Russian, Ukrainian, Mandarin and English speaker and has working proficiency in Spanish and French. She has experience conducting discourse analysis research and interviews in different languages, and proficient qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills.
