Governments are due to sign up to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday, December 10, and Tuesday, December 11.
Marta Foresti, director of the Human Mobility Initiative at the Overseas Development Institute, said: ‘Over the last few years we have seen just how badly governments all over the world have failed to put in place policies that protect the lives of migrants and allay public concerns over messy and incoherent approaches to border management.
‘The Global Compact for Migration will help governments work together to better manage migration and ensure that people making cross-border journeys can do so in a legal, orderly and safe way.
‘With several countries now backing out of the non-binding agreement, it is vital other member states maintain their commitment. The compact offers a pragmatic and rational approach to managing the reality of global migration.’
