Political leaders, chief executives and NGOs are gathering in Davos this week for the 2019 World Economic Forum.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution’.
Sara Pantuliano, Acting Executive Director of the Overseas Development Institute, will be attending the event to discuss how the new economic and social context must address the deep inequalities that have been allowed to develop.
She said: ‘As technological advancements and the rise of automation drive this new phase of globalisation, it is critical that businesses and governments alike work together to make sure it delivers the broad economic transformation and job creation needed to benefit all.
‘The dangers of not addressing the unacceptable inequalities currently fuelling social divisions and the resentment of established politics across richer countries is clear to see. At the same time, for those in lower-income countries, the opportunities offered by globalisation are currently in danger of being outweighed by the risks.
‘It is vital that governments, businesses and all concerned pursue a progressive Globalisation 4.0 that reduces inequalities or risk a political backlash that may in the long term erode the benefits that globalisation has brought.’
