In both Liberia and Timor-Leste significant progress has been made over the last decade in reducing armed conflict and political violence. This event will present research from case studies on the two countries followed by a panel discussion of how security progress can be achieved in fragile settings.
This case study explores progress in personal security in Liberia, identifying five key factors that have driven change, ranging from the role of the UN peacekeeping mission to a stable political settlement. It also identifies the significant challenges remaining in Liberia, noting the abundance of lingering potential triggers of conflict as well as various other concerns.
