Urban areas are increasing at a rate of 1.3 million people a day. Unplanned growth can be disastrous for the urban poor - but the need for top-down planning should be balanced against the importance of giving people a say in how their cities are run.

As part of Development Progress's research into urbanisation, we interviewed former MP Dan Byles, VP Corporate Development at Living PlanIT and Chairman, Smarter UK. Dan was also the founding member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smart Cities.
