Social protection, gender and age

Explainer

There is growing recognition – including in the Sustainable Development Goals – of the potential for social protection systems to address the underlying drivers of inequality and advance social justice.

Social protection policy frameworks and programmes must be developed through a gender-sensitive lens and must address social as well as economic vulnerabilities if they are to be truly inclusive and reach the most vulnerable people.

Our work, alongside ODI’s Social Protection team, aims to inform social protection frameworks and programmes (including cash transfers, public works, and others), to encourage gender- and age-sensitive design and implementation, alongside effective vulnerability targeting.
