The gig economy – in which mobile technology connects workers with the purchasers of their services – is growing rapidly around the world, including in developing countries. However, relatively little is known about how workers are experiencing this new form of labour, and how regulation and social protection can be made fit for purpose.

We focus on several areas that are critical to the gig economy, including:

  • Gender, inequality and the experiences of marginalised workers
  • The care economy: time use, flexibility and work-life balance
  • Digital and financial divides
  • Digital supply chains
  • Social protection
  • The future of work

Our research seeks to inform evidence-based policy to ensure no one is left behind as the gig economy continues to grow globally.
