Carbon emissions, air and water pollution, and other waste are at a record high – and rising. Catastrophic impacts on land and ocean ecosystems are threatening food security, access to clean water, and human health and prosperity.Ocean acidification and deforestation are major contributors to environmental changesThe worsening impacts of climate change are likely to force hundreds of millions from their homes by 2050Rapid urbanisation is increasing our vulnerability to disasters and undermining our capacity to prepare and respond to themWe must stop making bets on an unsustainable future that will place savings and societies at risk. We must engage all actors – national, regional and local governments, philanthropists, investors and consumers. If we hand over a planet with an uncertain future, history will not forgive us.António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-GeneralThe global population has quadrupled in the last century, and we are demanding more and more from our planet’s natural resources. Estimates suggest that global food demand will rise at least 60% by 2050. Can the planet support this growth? The poorest are affected first – and worst. People who are socially, economically, culturally or politically marginalised are the most susceptible to the effects of environmental changes. These shocks and stresses threaten to push 720 million people back into extreme poverty, and undermine the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our future depends on the decisive action we take now. But despite international commitments to combatting poverty and global climate change, there has been too little progress addressing these twinned issues simultaneously. Now is a critical moment. We urgently need evidence, ideas and action to confront these challenges.Sustainable solutions, positive actionBy supporting ODI’s Planet Under Pressure Initiative, you will be instrumental in enabling evidence-based solutions and policy change to push simultaneous, decisive action on these twin challenges of poverty and environmental shocks and stresses. The Initiative comprises world-renowned experts across energy, agriculture, water, sustainability, risk and resilience, urban growth, health, economic development, and policy change. They are uniquely placed to thoroughly understand the complex and intertwined challenges faced by our planet and our communities.Only interconnected solutions can ignite the progress that is needed. We must:Undertake robust, multi-disciplinary research and develop ideas on how to tackle the interconnected challenges of poverty and environmental shocks and stresses togetherBuild partnerships to create innovative and scalable solutionsEngage and influence local, national and international decision-makersEmpower communities to demand action, accountability and changeWhat is ODI doing? Our teams working on disaster risk reduction and financial inclusion are developing new tools, products and applications to support the poorest groups to manage risk, by convening actors from the insurance, technology and finance sectors.Building on our work over almost a decade, our climate, energy and finance experts are challenging the drivers of fossil fuel consumption and other unsustainable resource production to support a global transition to renewable energy. Our specialists on food and agriculture are working to unlock solutions to increase agricultural production, tackle global food insecurity and improve diet and nutrition. They drive environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive policies to stimulate investment and innovation on farms and in food supply chains. Our world-class convening expertise will enable new groups of decision-makers to come together – and work together – to create sustainable solutions and take positive, evidence-informed action. Only then can we ensure that both public and private capital is being deployed to the right solutions.ExpertsGuy JobbinsResearch AssociateAnna LockeHead of Programme - Agricultural Development and PolicyRebecca NadinHead of Programme – Risk and ResilienceMareike SchomerusSenior Research Fellow, Head of Programme, Research Director SLRCAndrew ScottHead of ProgrammeDirk Willem te VeldeHead of Programme - International Economic Development GroupEmily WilkinsonSenior Research FellowSteve WigginsPrincipal Research Fellow ResearchG20 coal subsidies: tracking government support to a fading industry G7 fossil fuel subsidy scorecard: tracking the phase-out of fiscal support and public finance for oil, gas and coal Pioneering power: transforming lives through off-grid renewable energy in Africa and Asia Moving towards a growing global discourse on transboundary adaptation Forecasting hazards, averting disasters: implementing forecast-based early action at scale 'Building back better': a resilient Caribbean after the 2017 hurricanes Implications of geoengineering for developing countries Future diets in the developing world: questions, answers and gaps Framing innovations for climate resilience for farmers in the Sahel Be part of positive global changeWe need engaged and influential partners who can make a substantial contribution towards our initial two-year, £2 million fund.Partners receive a package of exclusive and tailored benefits that include opportunities to engage with global thinkers and ODI's senior leadership, as well as invitations to exclusive events.Only with your support can we initiate the research, global cooperation and ambitious action that is needed to build sustainable societies and environments for everyone, now and in the future.
