Community conflict mediation

The Politics and Governance programme is supporting The Asia Foundation with its ongoing programmes in Nepal, Philippines and Sri Lanka analysing the role of international organisations in supporting community conflict mediation mechanisms.

The ODI's research seeks to analyse the assumptons that underpin these programmes at both the community, country office and head office level, and seeks to understand whether there are common threads that unite across different country programmes. It will situate these assumptions within the growing body of knowledge around communty-level security and justice programming. These assumptions will include whether supporting mediation improves people's access to justice and whether mediating disputes can prevent their escalation.

A specific interest is given to how information and incentives have shaped decision-making in thes countries. This means looking at how different forms of information, such as social science 'evidence', practitioner experience and ongoing relationships influence the direction of programming.
