Building on good practice: advancing gender equality and girls’ education

The United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI)-ODI ‘Good Practice’ collaboration aims to advance the global-level policy agenda on girls’ education and gender equality, by building the evidence base on good practices and barriers to access. In identifying key barriers and boosters to girls’ education access and gender equality in schools across the globe, the project findings will be crucial as an advocacy tool in informing emerging policy priorities and country level programming practices in 2016 and beyond.

In particular, the project's overarching objectives are to:

  • Contribute to the global dialogue and database on evidence and good practices in girls’ education and gender equality, by drawing upon lessons from a range of disciplines/sectors (beyond education) to inform educational policy and programming;
  • Strengthen technical capacity among select developing country partners, especially civil society actors and education ministry officials, to collect, assess and use data and evidence for policy advocacy, programming and research.

The project's outputs fall under two categories:

Research, knowledge synthesis and policy documents

Current outputs are:

Four further documents will be published by May 2017: a short report on gender equality in education in the SDGs; a literature review on positive approaches to girls’ education in conflict-affected contexts with a related policy brief; and a short report discussing financing to improve secondary education access and uptake for marginalised girls.

UNGEI's Fund for Documentation of Good Practice in Girls’ Education and Gender Equality
