The construction sector is the second-largest consumer of plastic resins globally (65 million tonnes in 2015) and its consumption has been growing at a rate of 4.3% per year for the past two decades. This report explores the technical feasibility of phasing out the use of fossil plastic in construction by 2050.

This analysis serves part of a broader research project investigating the technical potential for phasing out virgin plastic materials produced from fossil fuels by 2050. The low-plastics-consumption scenario put forward here illustrates how the construction sector presents an enormous opportunity to reduce the use of plastic materials.
