This paper suggests that on topics as varied as climate change, capital flows, trade liberalisation, and international security, current problems are discussed in frameworks which imply the need for new institutional arrangements at global level. The future role of the UN is debated in this light, taking account of the increasing prominence of other multilateral organisations which, in many ways, are side-lining the UN.
