Gendered risks, poverty and vulnerability in Peru

Research report

Research report

This case study is one of eight undertaken as part of a research project funded by the UK Departmenr for International Development (DFID) (2008-2010), and the Australian Government (AusAID, under the Australian Development Research Awards) (2008-2011), looking at gender and social protection effectiveness in Latin America, Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

The current report report looks at the case of Peru, where despite experiencing sustained economic growth (with a gradual impact on poverty reduction), there are still high levels of inequality and exclusion, particuarly in rural areas, where the most vulnerable population resides.

The report focuses on the Juntos conditional cash transfer programme which, unlike other CCT programmes in the region, aims to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty by promoting households' investment in human capital.
